Unfortunately, it was the day the deadly tsunami struck countries all around the Indian Ocean. Even worse, Ari was in the Aceh province of Indonesia, one of the areas hardest hit by the disaster. Ari and his colleagues were working on the construction of a house when the tsunami struck. When they saw the giant wave approaching unexpectedly, swallowing everything in its way, they dropped their tools and ran as fast as they could toward a nearby hill. The wave caught up with them quickly, pushing them swiftly inland before pulling them back out to sea. Ari was separated from his companions and spent the next days drifting in the water alone. The sea was full of debris that the tsunami had grabbed from the land. A stray piece of wood drifted by Ari, and he grabbed on to it. He floated like that until the next day when he saw a small boat. It was damaged, but he was able to climb onto it. He stayed there for several days, but the boat was leaking badly. He knew that he would have to find something better. Finally, a fishing raft came floating by. Although there were no people on the raft, Ari discovered a small container of fresh water and some clothes. He remained on the raft for days and avoided starvation by eating coconuts that were floating in the sea. Day by day, Ari waved at several boats that came into his view, but none of them saw him. He began to believe that he would never be rescued. One day, a large ship came by, and Ari waved and whistled at it. This time he was lucky. The ship picked him up and took him safely back to land. The next time you are watching a film and you see one of the characters jumping out of a plane, falling off a horse, or being blown through a window – spare a thought for the stunt artist. Lots of people think that stunt artists are just “extras” who play small, unimportant parts in films and television. Nothing could be further from the truth. A stunt artist must combine the skills of an actor with the physical abilities of a first-class athlete. He or she must be extremely fit, and highly trained in a number of activities like scuba-diving, horse riding, martial arts or parachuting. It is not easy to get started in a career as a stunt performer. Film and television producers look for experience and proven ability, so it is unlikely that they will take on a complete newcomer. However, because of the nature of their profession, stunt artists tend to retire early. This means that new performers must be employed, or there will be no one to take over when the present generation quits. Even when a stunt artist becomes well-known, the work is not regular. It may sometimes be necessary to travel to the other side of the world for a job which involves long hours and great physical danger. It is not a glamorous occupation either. Unlike the famous actors for whom they sometimes risk their lives, few stunt artists are recognized in the street by adoring fans. Question 36.
