It is powered by thermonuclear reactions near its center that change hydrogen into helium. The sun has existed in its present state for about 4 billion, 600 million years and is thousands of times greater than the earth. By studying other stars, astronomers can predict what the rest of the sun's life will be like. About 5 billion years from now, the core of the sun will become smaller and hotter. The surface temperature will fall. The higher temperature of the centre will increase the rate of thermonuclear reactions. The outer regions of the sun will expand approximately 35 million miles, about the distance to Mercury. which is the closest planet to the sun. The sun will then be a red giant star. Temperatures on the earth will become too hot for life to exist. Once the sun has used up its thermonuclear energy as a red giant, it will begin to shrink. After it becomes smaller to the size of the earth, it will become a whit dwarf star. The sun may throw off huge amounts of gases in violent eruption called nova explosions as it changes from a red giant to a white dwarf. After billions of years as a white dwarf, the sun will have used up all its fi and will have lost its heat. 1. 10. About 200 million years ago, as the Triassic Period came to a close, many species of animals disappeared from the face of the earth. Scientists previously believed that the series of extinctions happened over a period of 15 to 20 million years. Recent discoveries in Nova Scotia suggest, however, that the extinctions may have happened over a much shorter period of time, perhaps less than 850,000 years. Evidence for a rapid extinction of species at the end of the Triassic Period is found in the McCoy Brook Formation along the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. Fossils found in this formation indicate a rapid disappearance of species rather than a slow and gradual change over time. One explanation for a relatively sudden extinction at the end of the Triassic may be that a large meteorite struck the earth at the time and is responsible for a 70- kilometre hole nearby. If geologists and other researchers can find evidence, such as shocked quartz in the rock formations, that a meteorite did strike the earth, it would give more credence to the theory of rapid Triassic extinctions. It is possible, however, that even if a rapid extinction happened in and around Nova Scotia, it did not necessarily occur in the rest of the world. 1. The main topic of this passage is ___ . Read the passage and choose one correct answer for each question.(1 point) Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become “computer-literate”. But not all experts agree that this is a good idea. One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees is David Tebbutt, the founder of Computer town UK. Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer, David does not see it that way. He says that Computer town UK was formed for just the opposite reason, to bring computers to people and make them “computer-literate”. David Tebbutt thinks Computer towns are most successful when tied to a computer club but he insists there is an important difference between the two. The clubs are for people who have some computer knowledge already. This frightens away non-experts, who are happier going to Computer towns where there are computers for them to experiment on, with experts to encourage them and answer any questions they have. They are not told what to do, they find out. The computer experts have to learn not to tell people about computers, but have to be able to answer all questions people ask. People don’t have to learn computer terms, but the experts have to explain in plain language. The computers are becoming “people- literate”. 1. Which of the following is David Tebbutt’s idea on the relationship between people and computers? A. Computer learning should be made easier. B. There should be more computer clubs for experts, C. People should work harder to master computer use. D. Computers should be made cheaper so that people can afford them. 2. We can infer from the passage that “computer-literate” means___ . A. being able to afford a computer B. being able to write computer programs C. working with the computer and finding out its value D. understanding the computer and knowing how to use it 3. The word “it” in the second paragraph refers to the idea that Computer towns A. help to set up more computer clubs B. bring people to learn how to use computers C. bring more experts to work together D. help to sell computers to the public • 4. David Tebbutt started Computer town UK with the purpose of ___ . A. making better use of computer experts B. improving computer programmes C. increasing computer sales D. popularising computers B.
